Thanks to a new trailer and some leaked movie reports, there seems to be some confusion on two upcoming movies that are being referred to as "Avatar." Let us clearly define the two movies and provide some background on the naming confusion & hype of the two movies.A Tale of Two AvatarsIn 1997, Paramount Pictures announced that they would be making a live-action adaptation of the animated Nickelodeon show Avatar: The Last Airbender to be directed by M. Night Shymalan. Although they registered the movie's name to the Motion Picture Association of America for title ownership, 20th Century Fox claimed that they had rights to the movie title Avatar for James Cameron's project. Eventually, Paramount decided to rename their project The Last Airbender.Title AvatarDecember 2009 The Last AirbenderSummer 2010DirectorJames CameronThe Terminator, T2, Aliens, The Abyss, Titanic, True LiesM. Night ShymalanThe Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable, The VillageOriginsJames Cameron conceptualized Avatar in 1995 and created an 80-page scriptment for the project. The scriptment circulated the Internet for years but wasn't generally well-known amongst the general public. Cameron was sitting on the project until the technology caught up with his creative ideas.Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko originally conceived the idea for Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2001 and got the project greenlighted by Nickelodeon two weeks later. Since then, the show has been highly successful on Nickelodeon, earning high ratings and several awards.ConceptSet in the future, Earth is desperate for resources and interested in mining the alien moon Pandora. Unfortunately, Pandora is already inhabited by the ten-foot tall blue Na'vi, a peaceful, humanoid, alien race, whose top priority is maintaining the integrity of their environment.
Paralyzed ex-Marine Jake Sully is sent on an infiltration mission to Pandora in the body of an Avatar, a human-Na'vi hybrid that can withstand the Pandoran air that is toxic to humans. When Jake falls in love with a Na'vi princess, he must make the choice between the beautiful Na'vi and the destructive actions of his own people.Based on the animated show of the similarly-titled name, this live-action film is set in a world where the four elements can be controlled by different groups of people, or Benders. Aang is a young boy and the last of the peaceful Air Nomads (also known as Airbenders), but he is also the world's Avatar, or a physical reincarnation of the world itself. This allows him to control, or "bend," all four worldly elements. As the Fire Nation wages war against the other three nations for power, Aang and his young companions must help restore balance to their world.CastSam Worthington as Jake SullySigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace AugustineMichelle Rodriguez as Trucy ChaconZoe Saldana as NeytiriGiovanni Ribisi as SelfridgeLaz Alonso as Tsu'teyStephen Lang as Colonel QuaritchJoel David Moore as Norm SpellmenCCH Pounder as MohaMatt Gerald as Lyle MainfleetNoah Ringer as AangNicola Peltz as KataraJackson Rathbone as SokkaDev Patel as Prince ZukoAasif Mandvi as Admiral ZhaoShaun Toub as Uncle IrohCliff Curtis as Fire Lord OzaiJessica Andres as SukiTrailerNo trailer is available yet for Avatar, despite being due out in December of 2009.
