I have a question

Hi to all of the people out there who would also rather live on Pandora (provided that there'd be no chats with a Thanator), :-)

The last time I saw the film (number 5 so far), it occurred to me at the end that a number of the humans (I'm thinking especially of Max) don't have avatars, but are in human form and wearing gas masks, so here's my banal and literal-minded question: How can they survive on Pandora? Won't they run out of oxygen sooner or later?

I thought the same thing. if you care to. read the whole screenplay it answers alot of questions. like this one. jake say's and i quote " The science guys will keep the lights on,
here. But I won’t miss this place." I'm assuming there is a way to artificially make oxygen on pandora. I'm sure they're not bringing it from earth. remember the trip is 5 year 9 months and 22 days. Can you imagine the FEDEX charge for that. lol

Yes? That'd be me too. I'd like to have chats with the bigger cats btw, but that's just me digressing.

Okay, the gas masks requires a battery and I suppose with the unobtanium in abundance, the 'scientists' that were left behind should have any worry of generating enough electricity, to power these masks.

Unless they're hoping to be reborn into an avatar body, or something like that. ; )

Btw, I believe Pandora does have Oxygen, only not in abundance and in the right proportions like they are on Earth. The gas masks, possibly filter out enough 'other gases' so that the right amount of oxygen gets through. Do you find this valuable?

that does make sense. they are 150 years into the future. I'm sure they don't need tanks and stuff. Zahelu do you really think they want to be in Avatar bodies? I'm sure they would rather continue they're research un-opposed by the corporation.

The exopacks that humans wear on Pandora filter out the toxic elements in the atmosphere and the filters must be cleaned every 14 days but are continueously reusable. All that would be needed is an extra exopack to wear when the other needs to be cleaned. There is oxygen in about the same proportion as that of earth.

I believe that since they still have the facility that they will be able to sustain being there for quite some time. Maybe even make their own avatars over a period of time. They are scientists after all Do you find this valuable?

As in grow their own Avatars? Possible, if they had the right resources and the right scientists, as I believe not all scientists know everything, they're merely specialised and studied in their own fields.

Oh about that Oxygen thing, yes definitely oxygen there, otherwise there a fire won't be able to be sustained in their atmosphere. Perhaps there's too much Oxygen, thus you lose consciousness, much like how doctors put patient to sleep, while the rest of the toxic gas goes to work to kill you off.

The Pandora air is not toxic due to lack of Oxygen.
It has a high level of Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S). [The other gas in abundance there is Xenon. Xenon is a noble gas and is not toxic although much heavier. The heavy air with lighter gravity is what allows the denizens of Pandora to fly with all that massive bodies and allow the Pandoran creatures to be big] This is the gas that gives a rotten smell and is toxic as well if inhaled for long. Small amounts are not toxic (you would have smelled it in your high school chemistry classes, where there is usually piped supply for analytic chemistry expperiments).
Since it can be removed by adsorption by gas masks (today we will be using charcoal adsorbing masks which will be bigger but we can bet that there will be more technologically advanced and simpler masks with clear see through vision by 2150).
So long as there is supply of masks, it would be OK.
Even if you have Avatars, their human bodies need to breathe

The Pandoran atmosphere is mostly nitrogen/oxygen as is our own. The part that is of the most immediate danger is carbon dioxide, which at 18% or greater, causes humans to rapidly lose conciousness. That along with the hydrogen sulfide will kill a human in 4 minutes without the use of an exopack to filter out the toxic elements..

If the humans who stayed on Pandora were going to spend the rest of their lives in the environment, I wonder if Eywa could adapt them possibly enough to breathe the air, drink the water, etc. A biochemical spiritual transformation similar to Jake's. Do you find this valuable?

I have just recently seen the movie, so please pardon any newbie slip ups. The masks being sported by the Pandora humans are clearly named rebreathers in the film. As evidenced by the theatrically clear face coverings on them, I take the whole device as being present to emphasize that the humans on Pandora are under abnormal conditions. Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebreather for more details about rebreathers. Contrast the extensive description there with that for a gas mask. The gas mask is primarily for the removal of toxic parts of the atmosphere and not the supply of oxygen. (The user of the gas mask is not protected from gas that the skin can absorb.)
Therefore, it may be presumed that Pandora's atmosphere contains oxygen to some degree that obviates the need for humans to carry around supplies of it. Whatever the ratio of atmospheric gases on Pandora, we could focus on the description of what happens to a human without the mask: Unconscious in 20 seconds dead in 4 minutes. What combination of gases can or will produce that result? Further thought may be focused on why the Na'vi can operate in that atmosphere. Please go beyond the obvious - they're the natives. If you must create an entire biochemistry to make it possible for the Na'vi to survive, then feel free to do so. However, you must also note that a chemistry that is specific to the planet and not possible elsewhere, will be rejected, at least by me.
