What will Jake and Neytiri name their children?
Feb 10 2010, 2:50 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 10 2010, 2:50 PM EST
This thought just recently crossed my mind. When Jake and Neytiri have a child, shouldn't its name have a great significance in the story? I've been thinking, if they have a son, he could possibly be named after Jake's brother, Tommy. If they have a daughter, they might name her after Neytiri's sister, Sylwanin. Both of them were gunned down in cold blood. I would like to think that Jake and Neytiri would name their children after their own siblings in honor of their memories. Of course, this is just a theory. Does anyone else have any ideas? Do you find this valuable?

Hey, good question, because at the end of the script we find out Neytiri is already pregnant, so we know the sequels will have little Jake's or Neytiri's. I would think that being the type of people they both are, they would want to honor their siblings by naming their children after them. I wish we could see more of the back stories too, a little more about Tommy since he trained in the Avatar program & was a scientist. Also, the story about her sister too, even though she was killed by the RDA when they burned the school, I would like to know more about her. One thing I thought of myself, is that maybe a good writer will pen a novel from the movie & because they would need a lot more material to fill up a novel, then maybe JC would give more of his ideas about the back stories & other scenes that were cut. Anyway, just a thought, I really can't think of any good original names. Maybe if they have more than 1 girl, to name one after Grace or Trudy in honor of their memories. Also, to name another boy after Tsu'tey to honor him as well. Do you find this valuable?

And let us not forget Neytiri's father Eytukan. That would also be a possible name and I mean come on, Jake couldn't say no to that because he kind of was indirectly responsible for his death. Do you find this valuable?

I agree, I didn't think about that. & besides, that is traditional with a lot of cultures to name kids after the grandparents.

They could also use middle names to honor their friends and relatives.

Possible names for boys would be: Tommy Tsu'tey Sully, Eytucan Tsu'tey Sully, or Tsu'tey Tommy Sully

Possible names for girls would be: Sylwanin Grace Sully, Trudy Sylwanin Sully, or Grace Sylwanin Sully

Unless Jake and Neytiri decide to have 6 children. Then they would have enough for Tommy, Tsu'tey, Eytucan, Sylwanin, Grace, and Trudy Sully. Pandora's Brady Bunch!

I think the children would only have one name as is the Na'vi custom. I think they would name them after their siblings to honor them. Next if they have them would be Eytucan and some derivative of Mo'at, if Mo'at is still alive by that time.

Actually, I took another look at the script and found out that Neytiri's full name is Neytiri te Ckaha Mo'at' ite. Sounds like Ckaha qualifies as a middle name but....whatever. I just know that my theory about the sibling's names should be correct. However, there's no telling how many children they will have. Probably Eywa will bless them with high fertility. We'll just have to wait and see. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

For what it's worth, according to Paul Frommer's page on AvatarMovieZone.com, Mo'at'ite means daughter of Mo'at. So Ckaha might be Neytiri's surname or something else because the family relationship is already there in daughter of Mo'at. I can't find a translation for Ckaha.
Also, the Na'vi are modeled after Native Americans who rarely, if ever, reflected family names in children. Consider "Dances With Wolves": Stands-with-a-fist, Laughs-alot, Wind-in-his-hair. Do we know what "Tommy" translates to in Na'vi? Again referencing Frommer, Tompa means "rain". Could Tommy translate as "rain-in-his-pants"? Neytiri and Jake might want to re-think that one.

LOL, that was a good one, meadrochon. Rain-in-his-pants! hehehe.

All I know is it will certainly be interesting to see what or how they decide to name them, since it might very well be similar to Neytiri's full name, which sounds to me sort of like the way the Spanish do their full names, the 1st name, then the paternal surname, then "of" followed by the maternal surname. Even though we do not yet know what Ckaha means, it might have something to do with Eytukan & his family name or referencing him in some way.

Maybe a boy's name might be something like Tommy te Sully Neytiri' ite. Now that's a mouthful & sounds weird mixing the English with Na'Vi like that. I can not wait for the sequel!!! Please please let it be out by the end of 2012 if not sooner!

When coming to name a child, it depends on whether it is a girl or boy. If it's a girl you put Neytiri'ite behind it or for a boy you put Jake'itan. Do you find this valuable?

Oh wow, Churchill, that's so cool, I'm glad you found out about the male/female naming tradition for the Na'Vi. Makes sense in as far as the way their culture is.

I'm only guessing, because when Jake is walking up to Tsu'tey he says "Tsu'tey, son of Ateyo" I don't know if Ateyo was his mother or father. But the part about it being " 'itan " after is correct. Do you find this valuable?

First of all, we have to assume that Jake's avatar is capable of reproduction and there aren't more genealogical differences than five fingers vs. four fingers (by the way, has anyone taken a look at Na'vi feet?) which might prevent a viable offspring. It's odd that Cameron's scriptment would suggest that Neytiri is pregnant when, in a Playboy interview, he openly states the Na'vi "aren't placental mammals". I take it that Cameron changed his mind because of Neytiri's clearly mammalian characteristics. Her navel is one, there are two others.

I assume the Avatars aren't an equal part human to Na'vi in terms of genetics but only human enough for the nervous systems to be in tune. I wonder if in order for the human nervous system to link with the Avatars, all available extremities must be there too, hence the five digits on the hands and five toes on the feet. All interesting things to consider. Not placental eh, you're right, the naval would say otherwise.

If Jake's avatar was capable of surviving the Dream Hunt in which some Na'vi themselves reportedly died, he should be capable of just about anything, especially reproduction. Besides, he was Toruk Macto, who brought the clans together to save Pandora. Now he is Olo'eyctan. Eywa will definitely bless him with descendants. Jake and Neytiri will have children, and they will be hybrids.

Great points, victoryblade. I just want to point out that the script shows Neytiri pregnant near the last scene. I guess they decided to change that for unknown reasons. But I would think JC will write children in the sequel for them if he wrote that about her in the 1st movie. Do you find this valuable?

I agree with you both Vanessa and Victoryblade. Also, maybe Eywa may even favor Jake and Neytiri's children more than Jake and Neytiri, because they are a union of the two most favored Na'vi.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the development of the 5 fingered hand vs the 4 fingered hand. 5 fingers makes it possible to hold much heavier things like weapons. When Jake punches Tsu'tey, he takes him down because of the size of his hand. I bet the Na'vi don't do that kind of fighting because their hands are so slim.

Will this get developed in the sequal? One of the reasons Jake is brought to the Na'vi by Eywa is because they need more power and punch. As the film ends you can see that his physical body his much more muscular than Tsu'tey's. This is the physical legacy he brings to his children.

That is something I noticed too. Obviously in the beginning Jakes body is very slim because of the atrophy that no doubt occurred over 6 years of floating in a tube. But he gets thicker as the movie goes on. Something I was wondering about is how a human body would develop on Pandora since its gravity is only .8 of earths gravity. Since the Na'vi have reinforced bones and are naturally athletic, you combine that with a human bodies heavier gravity development and you possibly have a stronger body because of that.
