sick of this "originality" crap
May 3 2010, 8:58 PM EDT
Ok, i know i'm probably just going to be ranting to myself in this thread, but i gotta say it. I'm really tired of people bashing avatar by saying that it's unoriginal and it's just "dances with wolves/pocahontas in space". I'm not saying that the stories aren't very much alike, because i'll admit that the storyline of avatar isn't that original. BUT THATS NOT THE POINT. the point is to show people that that typical story--some native people are invaded by a technologically superior force and try to fight for their homeland--isn't over. so many people in today's world think that the whole cowboys and indians thing is old news, that the world has moved beyond that. And though it may not be happening very much today, JC is showing us that one day, when we are capable of traveling to other planets, HISTORY WILL REPEAT ITSELF. that old cowboys and indians story is going to be true in the future if we arent made aware of it. the human race will continue to do what it's always done, that's why the plot is "unoriginal". we've heard it before. and we'll hear it again if we don't change. the point of the movie isn't to be original in the story itself, but to be original in the way it presents a story that has existed in mankind as long as love and hatred. this new "cowboys and indians" story now takes place on another planet, with alien beings, and so it can relate to people of the modern age who know that one day we WILL be travelling lightyears into space. the story--no, the lesson---needs to be refreshed for the new generations who have forgotten what it really means. so i'm sick of hearing people bash avatar for that, completely forgetting or overlooking the true message and disliking it simply because it's "unoriginal". Open your eyes, people. Neytiri is right--no one can teach you to see.

I am the "Indian" in "Cowboys and Indians" thing. We are now all assimulated in the dominant culture now. Many of us have forgoten how to be Indian. But the truths in the old ways are still with us today as James Camerion pointed out in Avatar!

TallLakota, i was actually reminded of you when i wrote that. you seem to have a pretty good connection with your heritage though, as seen from your pictures and your videos of the mountain. that's a great thing.

If Avatar isn't original, with queues to link directly to the planet and people driving avatars, what is? You have your boy meets girl-boy looses girl-boy gets girl, or someone/something gets stolen and the adventures to find them/ it, or the quest movie, or the revenge for a killing/ loss of honor of something/someone, your historical/ biographical movie, etc. Can you think of any movie that is completely original? I'm sure they exist. The Hurt Locker-- war movie, bomb defused adventures; sorry, already been done. I'm sure totally original movies exist, but I can't think of one. Do you find this valuable? |

I have to agree with everyone about the naysayers claiming no originality to our precious movie. I saw the Hurt Locker, it was a good movie & I liked it, but did I want to see it a gazillion times, NO! Once was enough. Did it deserve to win best picture & best director, NO!!! But Avatar did hands down! Was the story line totally original, no, but who cares? It was told beautifully & had all kinds of wondrous elements to the story that were original. Not to mention the super job done by the actors, unbelievable! They still bring tears to my eyes after seeing it 16 times & they always will.

I'm sure so so many out there were completely disappointed with the results as well. Do you find this valuable? |

Hey guys! It's alright, you don't have to worry so much anymore. I've noticed that most of the Avatar-haters have finally shut their trap. Either they had some sense talked into them, or they just gave up on their ranting. I truly hope it was the former.

I suspect the nay-sayers have found something else to disparage. I got tired of them, too. They all parroted the same thing. Some of what they had to say might have been interesting if it was original. I can't think of an "original" movie either. Mind I'm going back beyond movies into plays as well. The "originals" must have been told around campfires, by folks living in caves. It isn't really the originally of the plot line. It is what you do with it. Do you find this valuable? |

" It isn't really the originally of the plot line. It is what you do with it."agreed! like i was saying, i understand that the plot of Avatar isn't completely original, but the way that JC presented it, using futuristic ideas and adapting it to the modern generation, makes it new again. we need to see this story put into a modern, applicable context so that we never forget the lesson presented by Avatar, Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, and our own history. " We need to see this story put into a modern, applicable context so that we never forget the lesson presented by Avatar, Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, and our own history. "Absolutely correct, TxonAtan. This is true of many stories. Take Macbeth. Present it in cloaks and tights, and it is a great story. Put it in modern dress, in a modern setting, and we begin to see connections to our own society, even ourselves. Pocahontas in period costume is just history, interesting but surely, we say, not something that could happen today. We need presentations that remind us WE haven't really changed for all of our technology. As a result, we need the lessons of the past kept fresh enough that we can possible avoid such debacles in the future. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I'd change that to those who cannot learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. Looking at history, we do a lot of repeating. Do you find this valuable? |
