Deleted Scenes
Dec 1 2010, 10:32 AM EST
I'm starting this thread for the deleted scenes you can find on the Collector's Edition DVD and Blu-ray sets. Most of these scenes conform to the published script, but there are differences. All of them have been shot with actors. Many of them lack some or all the layers of special effects, although there are also some completely live-action scenes.I invite you to comment about these scenes. Which ones would you most like to be finished and edited into a future release? Why do you think they were left out? And, while you're at it, is there any scene in the most extended version that you think could be better left out, or trimmed a bit? I'm sure most of you with an opinion would most want the Dream Hunt scene restored where Jake meets his spirit animal (Toruk, naturally) and has a vision of the blasted landscape that will become real all too soon. That's number two on my list. Number one is the scene where Max hijacks a Slash Cutter and gives the middle-finger salute to Selfridge just before he chops into the control tower. Do you find this valuable? |

I must be getting soft in my old age; however my favorite scene that didn’t make the cut was where Jake as an avatar was walking through the Na’vi encampment with a small group of curious but playful children in tow. At the end of this scene Neytiri has a couple of Direhorse in hand ready for the first riding lesson.

Yes, the "Pied Piper" scene is very nice. I just didn't put it at the top of the list because the "Finger Salute" from Max was a magnificent moment. Because it and the scene where Quaritch finally shows Selfridge that he's been in charge all along are missing, there isn't any satisfying resolution for the Selfridge character. At least Paul Reiser's weaselly corporate suit in "Aliens" came to a suitably sticky end.BTW, I was really surprised to find out how young Giovanni Ribisi is; he played Selfridge with a slimy gravitas worthy of a much older villain. I'd forgotten until last night that he was the medic in "Saving Private Ryan." And he was one of the continuing-role kids on "Blossom" which wasn't that long ago. Do you find this valuable? |

Especially the 'Hunt Festival'....I'd love to see that one fininshed out. After watching all the deleted scenes, I can only say...."more, please". Did anyone else notice the little ball of light that fell off of the departing Earth Ship as it left Pandora's atmosphere?....It fell back down to Pandora. And, I hope they add a few weeks to the Time Stamp on Jake's final Video Log entry....that scene was placed after the deleted scene by the water, where Jakesully is narating about how the forest is healing and 'new life' is springing up...and he puts his hand on Neytiri's stomach, as they both smile, knowingly. It seemed like more time had passed. Then we are taken back to the Video Log & the Transformation. Do you find this valuable? |

Been reading some of the other threads...didn't see this idea posted anywhere else yet.My apologies, if there is a better thread for this. We see the Avatars have stayed behind on Pandora. There are both male and female Avatars. I wonder if we will see some offspring born from the Earth Avatars? Since we are shown in a deleted scene that Jakesully and Neytiri appear to be expecting their own child (or maybe twins?...Jake was a twin.)...we are being told that the Avatar bodies are 'fully functional' to the extent of being able to sire offspring. So then, would a child produced from two Avatars be able to breathe the air and exist outside the realm of the link-chambers? That would be a really cool plot element, IMHO. I hope that Cameron develops that into the upcoming storyline. Do you find this valuable? |

My favorite scenes in chronological order:Pied Piper. Learning montage section (early cut): Moat: "He speaks well." Grace and Na'vi children counting to four. Neytiri: "When you see nothing, you will see everything." Jake: "Sometimes I have no idea what she's talking about." The Dreamhunt: Conversation between Jake, Grace and Norm. The Challenge: Quaritch: "Dopey, too." The Eye of Eywa: This was a real suprise for me. Even in "template level" this is amazing. The stone arches seem missing though. You're a long way from earth: Great acting (again) of Stephen Lang. Battle Camp: Trudy: "You know our chances suck." Jake: "Yup." Trudy: "We're going up against gunships with bows and arrows." Jake: "What's your point?" Do you find this valuable? |

"Okigrami:Most likely the little ball of light is the shuttle going back to Pandora. Without a shuttle the ISV Venture Star probably has no other choice than to go back to Earth. It wouldn't surprise me if James Cameron needs it in Avatar 2 and/or Avatar 3 to visit other moons of Polyphemus. Do you find this valuable? |

The Venture Star has 2 shuttles. The last remaining shuttle transported the remaining RDA crew from Pandora to Venture Star before taking off to Earth.

Of them all, the Hunt Festival scene would have added a lot to the film. You can tell a lot about a people by seeing how they celebrate. And really, they cut out Neytiri dancing. What on earth were they thinking? :p

To go scence by scence would be nice but all I can really says it that 80 to 90% would add depth and understanding to the entire movie. You would have more understanding and flow of Jake;s change from a gu-ho jarhead to tree hugger (both descriptions are not meant as derogatory) You would understand why Norm's attitude got better The tribual dance scences where great. Like you I think the Dream Hunt is very important As I said above 80 to 90% have merit Do you find this valuable? |

Watched all the deleted scenes in order and then watched the extended version for the second time. Was cool kind of added some extra dimension to the story though I caught myself thinking a scene was missing while I watched the extended version & realized I was mentaly inserting the deleted scene into the story. I liked them all, too bad they couldn't have added them all to the movie but then it would have been almost 3 1/2 hrs long. Wouldn't have bothered me but I don't think the theaters like movie that are much more than 3 hrs. long & I suspect they prefer them to be 2hrs or less. So how long do you think the sequel is going to be? I'm guessing 3hrs or 180 minutes. Think I'll start a thread of ppl's guess's of the length of the next movie & maybe another one on who will return in the sequel and who won't. Could have several of these.

Kaltxi AkGeff...I agree with you about the extra scenes...... I hope that the sequel(s) live up to the original. I am curious to see whether Jake and Neytiri's children have three or four digits (one of the scenes that didn't get in the film implies that Neytiri is preggy..... woo hoo!). Obviously the folk from "Rrta" will be back, and I cannot see their attitude being any better for the drubbing they took at the hands of the Na'vi and Eywa. Gods.... these people have become so real to me.... their spirituality and Universe paradigm are so very like my own. It would be amazing if the Na'vi (or a people like them) really existed to teach us those things that so many of us have forgotten. Perhaps the film will alert many of us to the fact that we are slowly killing our Mother...... (yeah... OK... I'm an optimist!). Tiyawn si atan, Kathryn (I did think of giving myself a Na'vi name, but I am not at all sure that I am worth of it)..... Do you find this valuable? |

However having said this; it is quite easy not to be able to distinguish the differences between us due to our similar heritage. As Australia has 5-6 times the population of New Zealand; with many expat New Zealanders, Australian culture is the dominant culture of the region. Australians have a strangled winey type of English accent and New Zealanders have a more lispy type of accent. It is quite easy to interoperate a New Zealand pronounced six as sex. So don't get too excited when you ask a Kiwi what comes after 5? Valdamar Do you find this valuable? |

Something about the southern cross, the outback, or marsupials..."Thank you for considering me worthy. The Na'vi are such magnificent people, with a code of ethics similar to my own, and one which humankind in general would be all the better for adopting....or re-adopting.... I think we had it once... Kehe!! I KNOW we had it once....I remember....so long ago..... Oh Gods, so much learned, and so much willfully "forgotten" in the rush to ridiculous material affluence and expectations. Like Neyriri, I am afraid for my people, but the enemy is within our race, not from outside.... we have no Toruk Makto to lead us to our salvation, it is in our own hands.... Would that we had our own Utral Ayvitra where we could really feel the agony of our planet.... The Earthly equivalent of Utral Aymokriya is a lot less definite as we do not have that immediate physical contact with the non-material world that surrounds and penetrates us, but the link IS there.....if we choose to use it..... I am a Kiwi actually... from New Zealand.. (there's a LOT of difference from the Aussies...lol)..... A Na'vi name?.... hmmm..... Perhaps something like "Eywa'evengite"..... "daughter of Pandora".... or is that a little pretentious?..... I do feel a bond with that mythical moon, it's people and that for which they stand.... Tiyawn si atan Do you find this valuable? |

Oops! My Bad! Sorry Kathryn I ment to write "Kiwi" sometimes I get so confused... Didn't mean to impune your nationality or anything. I believe Valdamar & honourguard are from Australia. Do Kiwi's and Aussie's get along ok? I was in Vancouver B.C. several years ago trying to get directions to find my buddy from a guy from New Zealand. His accent was so thick I could barely understand him, it was kind of funny but I had a heck of a time making sense of his directions. I think he was getting a little annoyed with me.

Hmm My wife & I took a guy from Australia sailing several years ago. She embarassed the heck out him when she asked him to hand her her "fanny pack". I guess in Australia fanny has a diffrent meaning than it does in the U.S.
