The Sequel: All Wet?
Apr 9 2011, 5:04 PM EDT
From what I've read the sequel is supposed to be based around an aquatic/ocean environment on Pandora. J.C. is having a submarine built capable of diving to the bottom of the Marianas Trench how the deep oceans of Pandora will get worked into the plot I don't know, any ideas? I am a bit concerned about how that would play out in the sequel, the idea of a Pandoran version of Atlantis with water breathing Na'Vi just seems like a stretch.. Think the coastal dwelling Na'Vi " the Akan? people of the eastern sea" will be the "site" of the sequel? Or possibly a more "south pacific" setting? Will the Na'Vi use boats at all? I was thinking of the catamarans used in Tahittii & all through the South Pacific or will they ride some sort of sea creature? What kind? A pandoran version of a dolfin or sea lion? What was that long necked ocean going dinosaur called? Plesiosaurus? A Pandoran version of that would be quite the ride I guess Kevin Costner's "Water World" has me a little nervous, what a debacle. What was he thinking? I never have watched the whole thing it was just too ridiculous. Do you find this valuable?

I never have watched the whole thing it was just too ridiculous.I have read some articles where JC is hoping to incorporate the existing above ground environment and below sea environments into the AVATAR 2 story. Consequently I have in past threads had a few words to say about any undersea storyline. Here is what I have said in the past: I have been giving some more thought on the development of the Na’vi’s queue. I suspect that Cameron has drawn heavily on the peculiar features of the flora and fauna from Earth’s sea to help design many of the terrestrial flora and fauna found on Pandora. The retracting spiral Helicoradium plant for instance has an undersea Earth equivalent, refer to Cameron’s own website. Though not in the movie, the aerial jellyfish Medusa-Aerocoelenterates is another example. Let’s assume that the Na'vi’s queue is also inspired by underwater creatures. As I mentioned before, sensing antenna or queues probably developed originally in creatures that normally live in deep and dark undersea environments. The deep sea giant squid for instance has two large sensing tentacles. Do you find this valuable? |

In addition to this I have been having some fun trying to think up some basic characteristics for wild and wonderful undersea creatures that could possibly appear in the sequel to AVATAR. One idea that I had was a shallow undersea creature that could quickly change its camouflage. Now I am aware that Cuttlefish are perhaps the best known exponent of instant camouflage change in the known universe. So I looked them up in Wikipedia. Low and behold, there in the information on Cuttlefish is a picture of a Na’vi blue striped Cuttlefish. The resemblance is uncanny to say the least. What is interesting about Cuttlefish is that they are also in the same Phylum (Mollusca) as giant squid. To take this theme one step further, one can imagine an undersea creature that has the queue of a Na’vi, and the camouflage changing ability skin of a cuttlefish. Cuttlefish are also reputed to be the one of the most intelligent fish on the planet. So why not have such an intelligent creature on Pandora, perhaps an undersea relative to the Na’vi. These creatures could use their queue’s like the Na’vi and also communicate underwater by semaphored color changes. What a spectacular CGI challenge this would be. Does anybody else have some thoughts on weird and wonderful undersea creatures that they would like to see in the sequel to AVATAR? Another possible sea creature that could be used to good effect in the sequel is the Flying fish (from the family Exocoetidae, which the French used to name their Exocet missile after). Uncannily, it too has 4 laced winged fin structures, just like the Irkan. Do you find this valuable? |

Hi Valdamar. Hmm where to start. I am not sure how far back in Pandoran evolution the que evolved. It seems to exist in most "higher" life forms but not all of them. The flock of 4wing'd blue flamingo like birds in the "first sortie" scene don't appear to posses ques although just about everything else that could be classified as a vertibrate does. The que attatches somewhere near the base of the spine/back of the head, that would imply that you need a spinal coloum & skull to have a que. I don't think insects would have a que but it may be that the que is an evolutionary adaptation of an insect's antenna. I can't imagine worms having a que. Maybe a mass extinction event in Pandora's past led to the evolution of the que and a divergence between species that posses a que and those that don't. But it would seem logical that que's would be possed primarily by the more highly evolved species on Pandora.

I don't really like the title of the supposed sequel. I hope they change that.UPDATE (or is it?) Sigourney Weaver Avatar 2 role confirmed Sigourney Weaver in Avatar Sigourney Weaver's character fleshed out Avatar's environmental message "Don't worry, I will be back," she told US movie website Coming Soon. Weaver played botanist Grace Augustine. Her character was fatally wounded in a climactic battle, but the actress said director James Cameron had told her "no one ever dies in science fiction". "He's told me the stories for the next two movies and I have to say that they're absolutely wonderful," she added. "Now we just have to make them." The original Avatar, which told the story of humans mining an alien planet for reserves of the improbably-named mineral Unobtanium, is the highest-grossing movie of all time. Director Cameron promised to turn the story into a trilogy if box office receipts reached $1bn (£633m). Work on the scripts has begun but, as yet, there is no filming schedule. When shooting commences, Avatar 2 and 3 will be made back-to-back, with months of post-production to create the computer-generated alien world of Pandora. Speaking on the red carpet at the 2010 Oscars, Cameron admitted: "If I were to start Avatar 2 tomorrow, it would still be three years away". He later confirmed that the first possible release date for the sequel was Christmas 2014. "The boss, Jim Cameron, he's not just going to make it for the sake of it," actor Sam Worthington told Radio 1 Newsbeat last year. "He always wants the challenge, he always wants to push the envelope and raise the bar and I think audiences will demand that of Avatar 2. "When he finds the challenge that's when we go back to work." Do you find this valuable? |
